I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon with my husband who says bonding things like "Where do you want that fence?" and who doesn't think twice about taking a miniature horse instead of the dog for a nightly walk. (Just think about the advantages, I've never had a horse want to mark every tree or sniff every passerby. It's also fun to watch the faces of the joggers.)

Our family has had several horses of various sizes and I rode, mainly hunt seat on our Morgan gelding. I purchased my miniature horse about five years ago. Neither one of us had ever driven, although I at least knew what a bit was. With the help of friends, we're figuring out the sport of the driving horse.

My horse is happiest driving out of doors and (hmmm…) so am I. We usually drive at home - which has necessitated a minimal style of landscaping with three large trees in the front yard for an obstacle. We've gone to clinics, taken lessons, and actually competed in one CDE last spring. It definitely won't be the last one! It's a learning experience and the journey is the fun part. I enjoy learning new driving skills, watching my horse develop both physically and mentally, and meeting some of the nicest people.
