| I grew up in a university town in California. We rode bicycles a lot because the world was flat. While attending university I raced bicycles and was fairly successful. I also competed in cross-country ski races in the winter. After receiving an engineering degree I moved to Washington to work for the Navy. I started out developing software, and gradually worked my way up the ladder until I was head of the IT department for the Navy base. Big mistake. I served my time, but when I had the opportunity I jumped back down the ladder. Now I'm back to developing software and I like it a whole lot better. |

I met my wife Merridy on a bicycle ride near Bremerton in Kitsap county where we still live. When we were first married we would go on bicycle rides almost every weekend and often went hiking in the Olympic mountains. On one of those hikes we met some miniature horses near the trail head. Merridy fell in love with them. "They are just my size", she said. When Merridy said she wanted to get her own miniature horse or two, I thought, "How much trouble can they be? They're just tiny little things." |
| Of course, we had to have a barn for them to live in, and fenced pastures for them to eat in, and a trailer to drive them around in, and a truck to pull the trailer. We didn't do as much hiking or bicycle riding after that. We went to horse shows instead. We met new friends, including our dear friend Wanda Lusk. I started to learn a little about horses, like the fact that many of the big ones are scared of the little ones. Hmmmmm. And then Merridy discovered driving. |
|
| Um, we need a carriage so we can drive the horses, and a harness so the horse can pull the carriage. That's OK, this driving thing seems like a good idea. It gives these little horses a real job, even if it is a little boring driving around and around and around and around in the arena. |
|
Then we discovered Combined Driving. This was even better. The horse seems to like it better too. But we need a new carriage, and a new harness, and maybe an extra harness or two. Oops, we need a bigger trailer to fit the carriage into because it won't fit in the truck because of the camper we have to put in the truck so we can stay overnight at the events. By the way, could you please volunteer to help run the events? Don't worry, it's easy! |
| I still work developing software for the Navy in my spare time. |
