Things that I learned from my first CDE

  • Gloves are like socks in the wash - they mysteriously disappear.

  • Double the amount of time I think I need to get ready and warm up for dressage. I don't know what it is about CDE time, but you wait and wait only to find out that the 15 minutes before your posted time to compete disappears in a blink of an eye. Really.

  • I was told that "tonnage rules." And there's some truth to this as the minis are like water beetles when it comes to scooting out of the way of the larger breeds. But I found that all drivers were very polite in the warm up areas.

  • One more practice walk through the obstacles is a very good idea. This works for cones too.

  • Don't leave running to the bathroom until the last minute - there will be a line.

  • If 3 out of 10 horses knock a ball off at #10, I'd better look at that angle again. I'll only know this if I watch the folks before me.

  • I will put items in the strangest places when I'm in a hurry. It's a good idea to assign my "must haves" a special place and then put them there.

  • Murphy's oil cleans just about everything but clothing.

  • Trotting for 30 minutes through fields of daisies creates a smile.

  • Humming while driving dressage keeps me from turning blue. (I tend to forget to breathe.)

  • Just pretend it's my trot cue when my watch alarm goes off at "C."
